National Future Directions in Youth Development Forum

On 4/5 July 2002, Ausyouth conducted the National Future Directions in Youth Development Forum. The Forum was dedicated to ensuring that all young people have the support opportunities and services needed to prosper and contribute to where they live, learn, work and play. The focus was on the big picture for youth development, with an emphasis on facilitation to bring together organisations and youth focused fields of government and community activity. The Forum was held in Sydney and Adelaide.

Dr Pittman

Dr Karen Pittman (pictured), one of the most influential international advocates and commentators on youth development, was invited to the Forum as a keynote speaker. Dr Pittman is Executive Director of the Forum for Youth Investment based in the USA. Dr Pittman coined the phrase "problem free is not fully prepared" more than a decade ago to reflect the need to move the prevailing approach to youth policies and programs beyond "preventing and treating problems" to fully preparing youth for success. She has devoted her career to advancing positive youth development policy and practice. Dr Pittman shared her insights into the importance and challenges of fully preparing and fully engaging youth in society.

2nd National Youth Development Conference

Our Future Now - empowering young people through youth development

The 2nd National Youth Development Conference was held 22-23 March 2001 at Stamford Grand Hotel, Glenelg, South Australia.

Conference proceedings

The conference had three themes:

  • empowerment of young people
  • engaging communities
  • quality outcomes

Conference workshops were grouped into eight streams:

  • international perspectives
  • young people’s issues
  • professionals and practice
  • promotion and communication
  • empowerment of young people
  • research and policy
  • volunteers
  • youth development snapshot

The aim of the conference was to advance a national strategic approach to youth development. The conference provided the opportunity for a range of contributors to youth development to meet with colleagues, gather information, promote initiatives and explore good practice.

The conference proceedings have been organised into several groupings: the Kaurna welcome and keynote presentations are presented first, followed by papers from the six issue sessions and the workshop presentations, which have been grouped under workshop streams. The proceedings also include rapporteur summaries and a list of conference participants.
