NIYLG 2005-06 Meeting 4: Final Presentations
25-30 November 2006, Canberra ACT
NIYLG members had their final meeting to finalise their project work and develop final presentations for the Australian Government. They also met with various guest speakers, who provided NIYLG members with advice and suggestions on how they can apply the skills and experiences learnt from NIYLG and further their leadership development. The inspirational speakers included Dean Widders, Member, National Indigenous Council and National Rugby League player for South Sydney; Emma McKenny, Strategic Partnerships Manager, Yarnteen and Carmel McPherson, Group General Manager, Qantas. Members also received a refresher course in Media Training.
The NIYLG 2005-06 final presentations was held at Parliament House, Canberra, on 30 November 2006, where NIYLG members presented their project outcomes and recommendations to the Australian Government and invited guests.
The event was successful, with attendance by over 200 people, including Members of Parliament, senior government officials, corporate representatives, community members and local youth. The Hon John Cobb MP, then Minister for Community Services, hosted the presentations, which featured guest speakers Dr Jeff Harmer, Secretary of FaCSIA and Dr Sue Gordon, Chair of the National Indigenous Council.
An official lunch followed the presentations. The lunch was hosted by the Hon Mal Brough MP, Minister for Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs.

NIYLG 2005-06 Meeting 3: Making projects sustainable
17-21 June 2006, Canberra ACT
NIYLG members had their third meeting to present projects to the National Indigenous Council and meet with Ministers. They also participated in workshops that will assist them in advancing their projects for final presentations in November 2006.
- Members met with the Hon Mal Brough MP, Minister for Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, and the Hon John Cobb MP, Minister for Community Services.
- Members presented their projects to the National Indigenous Council and were consulted by the Council on various Indigenous issues.
- Guest speakers included Ms Karla Grant, journalist, SBS Living Black, Ms Christine Anu, singer/actress, and Mr Joseph Elu, Chair, Indigenous Business Australia. NIYLG members also attended workshops hosted by various representatives from philanthropic and corporate bodies.
- Members attended a presentation by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on the Census. Members were also consulted by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade regarding strategies for raising awareness of APEC 2007 among young Australians.

NIYLG 2005-06 Meeting 2: Work-planning
7-12 December 2005, Newcastle NSW
NIYLG members reconvened for the second meeting to develop project work-plans, participate in professional media training and networking with high profile Indigenous leaders who provided members with role models and guidance in progressing their projects.
- Guest speakers included former Senator Aden Ridgeway, National Indigenous Council Chair, Dr Sue Gordon, Office of Indigenous Policy and Coordination Leadership and Development Group Manager, Ms Kerrie Tim and actress, Ms Leah Purcell.
- Members obtained assistance for their projects from government subject experts representing OIPC, DEWR, DEST and FaCSIA; and met with non-government staff involved in local Indigenous initiatives including the Hunter Aboriginal Youth Committee, Newcastle University, TAFE Newcastle, Youloe-Ta CDEP site and Kup-poon-de Refuge.
- Members were also consulted by FaCSIA regarding the Longitudinal Study of Indigenous Children and completed professional media training.

NIYLG 2005-06 Meeting 1: Orientation
16 - 19 September 2005, Canberra ACT
The Orientation meeting provided members with a solid background on government processes and influencing skills for progressing important Indigenous youth issues with the Australian Government
- Members were consulted by the Minister for Local Government, Territories and Roads about the Australian Government's position on the Aboriginal Tent Embassy.
- Guest speakers included National Indigenous Council Members, Mr Warren Mundine and Ms Tammy Williams; and government representatives from the Indigenous Coordination Centres and the Office of Indigenous Policy Coordination.
- Members formed topic groups and nominated areas of interest, which they progress during their term, including Youth Leadership, Cultural Identity, Education, Employment and Family Violence.
