NIYLG Home
The National Indigenous Youth Leadership Group (NIYLG) 2005-06 was the last term to operate as a separate Indigenous youth consultative mechanism. In 2007, the NIYLG was consolidated with the National Youth Roundtable (Roundtable).
Roundtable 2007 has increased to 44 members, including 12 Indigenous young people. It provides an opportunity for Indigenous and non-Indigenous young people to work together and learn from each other. It gives Indigenous young people an opportunity to be heard on issues other than those considered to be Indigenous.
Strong Indigenous representation of at least 12 members will be maintained in future Roundtables.
Applications for Roundtable 2008 have now closed. As the Australian Government has assumed a ‘caretaker’ role following the announcement of the Federal election, there is likely to be a delay in announcing the outcome of the selection process and also with the commencement of Roundtable 2008. If you have any questions about the Roundtable you can contact us on roundtable@thesource.gov.au or by calling us on 1800 624 309.
NIYLG 2005-06
Members of the most recent group, NIYLG 2005-06, had a fourteen month term and participated in four formal meetings, from September 2005 to November 2006. The members were selected through a national nomination process, reflecting the diversity of Indigenous youth in cultural heritage, life experiences and circumstances. Seventeen members were successful. Members were aged 18 to 24 years at the time of selection.
NIYLG members worked on projects based on areas of mutual interest to the Australian Government and NIYLG members. The projects topics were youth leadership, cultural identity, education and employment. In developing and progressing their projects, NIYLG members were assisted by representatives of relevant government departments, who provided them with guidance and expert advice on project-related issues.
During residential meetings, NIYLG members met with prominent Indigenous and non-Indigenous leaders and representatives of government departments, government ministers and Members of parliament as well as with representatives of corporate and community sectors. Guest speakers provided members with advice on personal development as future leaders.
The NIYLG 2005-06 term culminated with a final presentations ceremony at Parliament House, Canberra, on 30 November 2006, where NIYLG members presented their project outcomes and recommendations to the Australian Government and invited guests.
A report would soon be available to document the NIYLG members’ projects and their recommendations, as presented at Parliament House. Please refer to the Publications Page.
