The Voices of APEC

APEC Leaders’ Week, which will take place in Sydney early September, is the culmination of the APEC Australia 2007™ host year, and brings together Senior Officials, APEC Ministers, Business Leaders and the Leaders of the 21 Member Economies.

APEC has a strong history of engaging youth with issues relevant to the region and as part of this year’s APEC Leaders’ Week, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Youth Outreach Program will host a number of APEC specific youth activities.

As part of the program, Voices of the Future of APEC has joined forces with Australia’s Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme, and together they will gather around 100 students and educators from 13 APEC member economies for an exciting six-day program.

The Voices delegates will work in small teams of 5-8 featuring a mix of APEC Economies, and they will rotate through the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) meeting venue to observe and conduct on-camera interviews with officials and leaders. Participants will also tour the International Media Centre and some will get to observe the proceedings of the ABAC Business Summit.

These activities will provide an excellent opportunity for the youth of APEC member economies to learn in a practical way about APEC and the challenges and opportunities in working towards a sustainable future for the people of the Asia Pacific region.

Voices has been running for 10 years. In 2007, delegations from Australia, Indonesia, Japan and Singapore will participate for the first time.

If you want to learn more about APEC or the Asia Pacific region visit www.apeceducation.edu.au or www.apec2007.com

Cadets spend a weekend in the Navy

Thursday Island CadetsThe first official duty of Training Ship (TS) Melbourne’s weekend on HMAS Melbourne was to perform a ceremonial sunset, held at the Docklands as part of the Melbourne to Osaka pre-yacht race celebrations. TS Melbourne was asked to assist by having our cadets line the boundary of the parade area.

We all arrived early, which gave us time to enjoy a few songs performed by our warm-up act, Killing Heidi. When the parade was announced, and the band fired up, the first thing the public got to see was TS Melbourne march on and take up their positions around the parade ground. A little bit daunting for some cadets, being their first parade in public. It was all over quite soon. The cadets did a fine job – one to be proud of.

The next day we were invited to be on board the HMAS Melbourne all day. Its official duties were to start the yacht race, and host 150 dignitaries from Melbourne and Japan.

Spending the day onboard was a fantastic opportunity to learn about many of the jobs available on a ship out at sea, and spend some time with the sailors that do those jobs.

The Australian Defence Force Cadets is a youth development organisation where 12 and a half to 20 year olds take part in adventurous, military-like activities, while learning about leadership, team building and themselves.

Launch of a new phase of the National Drugs Campaign

Thursday Island Cadets

The Australian Government has launched the next phase of the National Drugs Campaign. Part of the Governments Tough on Drugs initiative, the Campaign is designed to prevent illicit drug use and promote access to support services for those in need.

The Campaign will include television, print and online advertising with messages targeted at young people 13-17 years, young adults 18-25 years and parents. The emphasis on the harms for 13-18 year olds is on the illicit drugs most prevalent amongst this group – cannabis, ecstasy and speed. The harms of Ice will be the focus for communications with 18-25 year olds.

If any readers would like to connect with the campaign messages, the advertising, information resources and evaluations of the first two phases can be viewed and downloaded at www.australia.gov.au/drugs. Orders for information resources can also be placed through the website or by calling the Campaign info line on 1800 250 015.
